The North Flats is one of the best places in the country to learn how to windsurf or kite board. With shallow warm waters and consistent winds many people come to the North Flats just to learn how to sail and kite. The SPI Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Organization encourage everyone to take advantage of this special place to learn our sports. However, the owners of the North Flats are insistent that any business or individuals teaching for payment of any kind, be a legal business and be professionally certified to provide such training. Friends teaching friends or family members teaching other family members are welcomed and encouraged. Anyone teaching as a business or for profit must be approved by the Organization and meet the minimum requirements listed below.
Requirements to teach Windsurfing or Kiteboarding at the North Flats:
Our lease agreemnt with the North Flats property owners requires that any business, organization and / or individual providing "paid for" lessons and / or instructions on windsurfing and / or kiteboarding at the North Flats be approved by the SPI Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Organization and meet the following minimum requirements.
1. The business, organization and / or individual must have a current business license and Texas State and Federal taxpayer ID number.
2. The business, organization and / or individual must be a legitimate business with a permanent Store Front.
3. All individuals giving windsurfing and / or kiteboarding lessons for a fee must be professionally certified to provide such instruction.
4. All businesses, organizations and / or individuals providing windsurfing and / or kiteboarding instruction at the North Flats must carry a minimum of $1,000,000.00 in Liability Insurance.
The following businesses have met or exceeded these minimum requirements and are approved to provide windsurfing and kiteboarding instructions at the North flats.
Kiteboarding
South Padre Island Kiteboarding (www.southpadreislandkiteboarding.com) has met all the requirements and is the ONLY organization authorized to conduct Kiteboarding lessons at the North Flats.
Windsurfing
Windsurf the Boat Yard (www.windsurftheboatyard.com) has met all the requirements and is the ONLY organization authorized to conduct Windsurfing lessons at the North Flats.
