Membership Stickers
Yes, it’s that time of year - Fall - which means it’s time to renew your annual membership stickers. The new 2008 stickers are available as of November 1, 2007. No rate changes for the stickers. The annual rate is $25.00 per car, and the monthly rate is $15.00 per car. The membership form is enclosed in this newsletter. The annual membership form is also available on our website www.spiwindsurfing.com. In addition is the liability release form, which MUST be signed and turned in. The owners of the North Flats property are leasing the use of their property to the members of South Padre Island Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Association with the requirement that all members of this organization submit a signed release form. For the monthly pass it will be necessary to fill out the form at one of the local shops. With the monthly rate you will be given a mirror tag (no sticker) which will display its expiration date and the license plate number of your car. The new stickers should be placed in the upper corner of the passenger (right) side of your windshield. By displaying your membership sticker it shows we are in accordance to the property owner’s requirements. We’ll need some self policing, so we ask your assistance in assuring everyone’s car at the Flats has either the sticker or mirror tag on display. If you have any questions about your registration or the release form email Herman at sbsso@sbcglobal.net and be sure to put SPI Windsurfing in the subject field.
Summer 2007
This summer has been unusually calm wind wise. June had maybe 3 days with over 20 mph winds. July was our wettest in many a year! One day in July, Rick Ekstrom and Jibber took a day off for some speed runs at the "Ditch", the Brownsville Ship Channel. It looked promising so Rick rigged a 5.7 KA Race sail and Jibber a 4.5 AFT. Upon entering the water the wind subsided and both were too under powered for any good runs. After about half an hour of struggling a BIG ship entered the channel from the island. Rick explained what happens from the wake of a ship, and to get out of the water with equipment in hand – fast – as a 2 foot tidal wave is on the way! First as the ship approaches the water level recedes about 50 ft from shore and 2 ft in depth, then as the ship passes the wake wave from the ship comes rushing back hitting the channel like a Tsunami type flood! Rick and Jibber were left standing on the embankment with their equipment unscathed and the wind dying. Three days later the wind blew over 30 mph at the Ditch but no one was able to make it and the winds haven’t blown since. So when you all head down here for the fall bring good tidings of wind. Please!!!
From our Kiteboarding friend, Cliff
Summertime at the North Flats usually conjures up two thoughts, hot and windy. Unfortunately this summer season wasn't really either. Rain, lots of rain here and all over Texas has kept our state a little cooler this year and that energy has been missed. Less heat, less convection, less wind. Mother Nature soaked most everyone’s summer in one way or another here in Texas, but at least now there's no drought. Hopefully the wind drought here on sunny South Padre Island will come to an end with a spectacular Fall season and kiteboarding will once again flourish at the North Flats. See you when the wind blows!
