Newsletter - March 2005
It’s spring sailing time and you know what that means! March is Spring Break Month in SPI country but after that the real fun begins with warm water, warm air temps and the spring winds that draw windsurfers and kiteboarders from all over the states to SPI in April and May. Your SPI Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Association wants to do its part to make sure you have a great spring. So check out this list of activities and events.

The action starts with the 4th Annual South Texas Kiteboarding Rodeo on April 8-10, 2005. For more information on this and other kiteboarding activities check out www.southpadreislandkiteboarding.com.

The Kiteboarding Rodeo is just the beginning. The SPI Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Associations annual Spring Dinner is on Friday April 22, 2005 at Louie’s Backyard. The dinner starts a 6:30PM and features Louie’s famous seafood buffet. Tickets for the dinner are $20 per person and can be purchased at the North Flats, please see Jibber. This year’s dinner will also feature music by two of our fellow windsurfers Nancy Cook and Jon Neher. Don’t forget the drawing for two new sails that will be given away at the dinner.

Then the big event of the season is the 25th Annual Windsurfing BlowOut. The BlowOut features races for sailors with skill levels ranging from amateurs with no race experience at all, to experienced racers who will race for the bragging rights of being the fastest windsurfer on the Laguna Madre. Race Registration will be at Jakes on 4/29/05 from 6:30PM to 8:00PM. The BlowOut dinner will be Sat. night at Dolphin Cove starting at 7:30PM. This year’s dinner will be catered by Jakes. Mmmm, can already taste them fajitas. Special note, this years BlowOut is at the North Flats. For more info contact Herman.

Also mixed in with all this activity will be three swap meets. All will be on Saturdays and the dates are April 9th, April 23rd and May 7th. So load up all that extra gear and head for Louis’s Backyard parking lot. All the meets start at 9am but like any swap meet, the good stuff goes fast so get there early.

And finally, be sure to check out our recently updated website. If you haven’t been there for a while, you’re missing out on all the updated information. BlowOut registration forms and North Flats release forms are now on line.

Do we have your Signed Release Form for 2005? - For those of you that have not renewed yet, the date on the top of your address shows the last year you’ve paid your annual registration fee. When you renew MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE YOUR COMPLETED FORM WITH SIGNATURE. Your registration form is useless without your signature. Also note any changes in your information and be sure to include your email address.

Next time you go out to the Flats to sail or kite you should notice that the road from the highway to the launch area is a little smoother and if we’ve done our job right there should be fewer puddles for you to drive through. We rented a backhoe and are doing our best to fill in the holes and level out the road. In an effort to save a few dollars we rented the equipment and then asked for volunteers to come out and help get the job done. We had no shortage of people wanting to help and we want to thank all of them for their time, help and advice.

Final Note: Just in case you have not yet sent in your 2005 Release Form we’ve included a copy in this newsletter. Please feel it out, sign it and return it to South Padre Island Windsurfing - P.O. Box 3827 - South Padre Island, TX 78597. You must have a copy on file with the association before you can use the North Flats. No exceptions.

Call for Pics and more - You are one of 100’s of windsurfers and kiteboarders that make the journey to SPI each year. We’re looking for special stories and pictures we can put on our website to share with others. If you have a story to tell or pictures to share contact us at isrjibber@aol.com.
